travel agent working

I often hear from companies that “We are booking online to save money”. However, does it really save you money? Is it the most efficient way to manage your travel or your time? Most importantly, does it ensure that your travelers are both safe and well informed?

It is true that airlines would prefer you to book directly with them and online. They would actually prefer if travel agents didn’t exist, however, they do recognize that that cannot provide the same levels of service as that of a travel agent. Airlines no longer pay travel agents commission and in fact, on occasion, will offer lower fares on their respective websites, deliberately undercutting the travel agent. It is kind of funny that we are now in direct competition with the companies we are supposed to represent!

Here are 10 reasons why you should book flights with a Travel Agent:

  1. Travel agents can hold a seat for you, while you make your decision (not possible via online booking sites)
  2. They will do all the work for you – flight tickets, hotels, car rental
  3. Travel agents have access (in most cases) to much cheaper flight tickets than online booking sites
  4. You can easily request special arrangements like child/group discount, vegetarian meals, window seat, pick-up at the airport, wheelchair assistance, etc.
  5. Travel agents are always available – before, during, and after your trip
  6. If you’re planning a group trip (imagine – you have to get twenty people from London to an event in Uganda. Finding the twenty most suitable flight tickets and booking them can be a real hassle)
  7. When you need a really complex flight (New York – Paris – Berlin – Bangkok – Los Angeles – New York)
  8. If you’re a frequent business traveler – it’s a lot easier to get your own travel agent
  9. When you’re in a rush and don’t have any time to look for flights
  10. If flight “hunting” and booking is simply not your thing

One of the best ways to find a reputable travel agent is to get referrals from your friends and family. Anyone that has used that travel agent for a previous trip and enjoyed their service is someone worth checking out. Remember, they are there to work for you.

Know your travel budget before you reach out to a travel agent. Likely, this will be the first question they ask you and will help steer them toward the best destinations for that budget. If you are traveling somewhere that’s specialized, like going on that once-in-a-lifetime Ugandan Safari, find a specialist that knows that region inside and out. They will usually have the best deals and relationships with hotels and activity companies in that area.
